How long that music video should have be? It may be 3 or 4 minutes per video. But there’re new experimenters try to do something new ,like mix music video and short movie altogether. It was happened around 80′s. Of course Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the best example. But there’s another example of this case in that area…. that you may have heard or seen before.
It’s Jazzin’ For Blue Jean, a 21 minutes short film that directed by Julien Temple (famous music video director of that time) and starring, of course, David Bowie. It was made to promote “Blue Jean”single in 1984. But I’ve seen it for the first time around 1 or 2 years ago from my “Best Of Bowie” DVD (which is an easter egg ,hmm….) After watching this film, I realized that why this film was less success than Thriller. First of all, it’s romantic-comedy. OK, I don’t like this kind of movie, anyway, but the story is not too boring or too lame for me.
It’s the story about “Vic” (played by David Bowie), the not-so-famous guy that fall in love with the girl. He tries to convince her that he knows “Screaming Lord Byron”(also played by David Bowie), the girl’s favourite artist. So the girl (sorry, her name doesn’t mentioned in this film lol) challenges Vic to introduce her to him. And after that, the adventures of Vic begin.
Hmmm it’s not the exciting story like Thriller, so it might have the less attention. But it’s not too boring for me (as mentioned above), because it has some gags around the story and Bowie’s acting is OK (I guess…). Anyway, it is fun to be watched.
I don’t know how success was this film made. But I think it should have been regarded than this.
